Choose where you want protection

Trade marks are territorial. You only get rights in the countries you register in.

Australia

Best for Australian businesses, or anyone trading in Australia. You can choose a standard filing or a faster examined option depending on your situation.

United Kingdom

(UK IPO)

Best for UK trading, UK brand protection, Amazon/retail requirements, or expansion plans into the UK.

New Zealand

(IPONZ)

Best for businesses selling or expanding into New Zealand.

Not sure which country to start with? File where you’re trading now (or launching first). You can add other countries later.

How it works

Details intake

You share the trade mark, what you sell, and the countries.

Coverage setup

We confirm classes and draft the goods and services wording.

Filing

We lodge the application in AU, UK, NZ, or a combination.

Examination

The office reviews the application, we keep you updated.

Acceptance

If accepted, it moves to the publication stage.

Registration

If no issues arise, it proceeds to registration.

Common mistakes we help you avoid

Wrong owner

Filing under the wrong entity, then needing to fix it later.

Wrong classes

Missing what you actually sell, or paying for coverage you do not need.

Messy wording

Goods and services wording that triggers objections or limits protection.

Skipping the search

Filing without checking risk, then facing rebrand pressure.

Deadline slips

Missing response dates, renewals, or key steps in the process.

Protecting the wrong thing

Registering only a logo, not the name, or missing key brand variants.

Timeframes

Trade mark registration takes months, not days.

Timing depends on the country, examination issues, and whether anyone opposes the application.

Do I need a trade mark to use a business name?

No. Business names and company names are different from trade marks. A trade mark is what gives you stronger legal rights to stop others using the same (or confusingly similar) brand for similar goods/services.

Should I file a word mark, a logo, or both?

If budget allows, many businesses file the word mark first (strongest protection for the name). A logo filing can make sense if your logo is distinctive or you rely on it heavily.

What does “classes” mean?

Trade mark fees depend on the number of categories (“classes”) of goods/services you choose. You only get protection for the classes you file in.

Can I change the owner later?

Sometimes, but it can be messy and may require formal steps. It’s better to file correctly from day one.

What if someone already has a similar mark?

That’s where a clearance search and risk check helps. If you want that level of confidence, ask us about our clearance search service.

Can Plummark help me register a trade mark in other countries like the US or EU?

Yes. While our self-serve platform currently supports Australia, New Zealand and the UK, we also offer managed trade mark filing support in other countries, including the US and EU. Tell us where you need protection and we will guide you through the process and handle the paperwork.
